Exploration of the Berlin Underworlds

News from the institute

The 31st edition of the Forum Bauinformatik, an annual conference especially for young scientists in the field of informatics in civil engineering, took place in Berlin this year. Since 1993, the Institute has participated in the Forum Bauinformatik on an ongoing basis in order to present research work, discuss problems on a subject-specific basis and inform itself about the latest state of research. As always, various contributions on diverse research topics were published and presented.

For this year's Forum Bauinformatik, the scientific community in the field of informatics in civil engineering in the German-speaking regions was drawn to the capital of the Federal Republic of Germany. Organized by a team of the Technische Universität Berlin, a varied program with interesting lectures was offered from September 11th to 13th. Among other things, topics in the context of Building Information Modeling, Structural Health Monitoring, simulations, visualizations, geoinformation systems as well as data modeling in civil engineering (e.g. ontologies) were addressed.

In connection with the research project SCOPE Meiling Shi presented the contribution “Blockchain-based Data Synchronization for Product Catalogs in Distributed Systems”. Anna Wagner presented “Zusammenführung modularer Ontologien zur Beschreibung parametrischer, multifunktionaler Bauprodukte in einem Semantic Web Kontext” and André Hoffmann rounded off the participation of the project with a lecture on “Verteilte Herstellerdatendienste zur Bereitstellung von Produktdaten im Web”.

The project INSITU was represented with two submissions. First Christian Eller presented a concept for the “Teilautomatisierte Zusammenführung heterogener digitaler Daten aus multiplen Quellen im Rahmen der Tatortdokumentation”, followed by Steffen Franz from the project partner BKA, who explained “KI-Methoden für die automatische Anreicherung von räumlich-semantischen Tatortmodellen”.

Furthermore, Patrick Scheich presented parts of his master thesis as part of an “Analyse von Mobilfunkdaten in urbanen Regionen am Beispiel von CDR-Daten aus Mailand 2013”, while Timo Bittner and Christian Thiele presented the results of the contribution “Untersuchung des Potenzials der Unity-Engine für Entfluchtungssimulationen auf Basis der RiMEA”.

Further information on the contributions and a detailed list of all authors will be available in the Publications section in the coming days.

In addition to the scientific contents this year’s Forum also offered numerous possibilities to exchange itself over other developments and to attach contacts with other researchers during the evening barbecue and the concluding conference dinner. Furthermore, two guided tours through the Berlin underworlds by the “Gesellschaft zur Erforschung und Dokumentation unterirdischer Bauten” offered a highly interesting change. We would like to thank the organizing team of TU Berlin and look forward to the next forum, which is set to return to Darmstadt in 2020.
