Augmented reality (AR) simplifies the inspection and maintenance of technical systems. Specifically, AR can be used to navigate to technical systems, which are then automatically recognised. Standardised and clearly visible designation is mandatory for certain technical systems. To what extent does this designation simplify AR tracking?

Augmented reality (AR) is a technology that allows digital information and virtual elements to be superimposed on the real world to create an augmented, interactive environment. AR is suitable for various applications, for example for the inspection and maintenance of electrical systems and the technical building services of a building. For this, however, all objects must be reliably recognised, i.e. tracked.

The aim of this thesis is to examine common referene designation systems such as the KKS (Kraftwerk-Kennzeichensystem) or RDS-PP (Reference Designation System for Power Plants) for their suitability as anchor points for spatial tracking. By means of a literature research, requirements for AR tracking are to be identified and set in relation to reference designation systems of plants and building installations. Subsequently, at least two methods should be conceptualised and tested in practice. For this purpose, an AR application for smartphones or AR glasses should be developed and validated using the Unity game engine. The IIB facilities are available as a test environment. The results of this thesis will help to define requirements for the reference designation of technical systems so that the associated systems can be successfully tracked within an AR application.
