Cardboard Virtual Reality in teaching
Video project on the use of Cardboard Virtual Reality in teaching at the Institute of Numerical Methods and Informatics in Civil Engineering

In the summer term of 2023, the Institute of Numerical Methods and Informatics in Civil Engineering (IIB) used Cardboard Virtual Reality in a course for the first time. The HessenHub accompanied Pascal Mosler, M.Sc. on film through the conception and implementation of the bachelor course module “Geometric Modelling and Visualisation II”.
Virtual Reality (VR) is becoming more and more widespread in academic teaching. But which technical and organisational prerequisites must be met to enable a large number of students to develop VR applications independently? In the course “Geometric Modelling and Visualisation II”, the IIB teaches all steps from creating a digital building model to appealing visualisation using VR. As the use of stationary VR hardware is not possible in such a large course, , research assistant at the IIB, decided to use Cardboard VR when planning the new course. Pascal Mosler, M.Sc.

Background
The HessenHub is a network project currently involving 13 universities in Hessen. It supports lecturers in the professional use of digital media in academic teaching and promotes cross-university networking. The video produced is part of the video series “WiP”. The term “WiP” stands for “Work in Progress”. The short videos provide insights into current processes or projects with interesting didactic settings and scenarios, their focus is on practical implementation.
