From point cloud to BIM – Technological analysis and procedure concept on example of existing buildings of TU Darmstadt

This thesis analyzes and compares technologies for automatic detection of Building Information Modeling (BIM) objects in point clouds. The growing importance of BIM in the construction industry and the broad field of application for BIM models makes it necessary to build such models for existing buildings as well. One promising method is the use of photogrammetry or laser scanning to generate point clouds, which are then converted into 3D models. For this workflow, a concept is developed by presenting three software solutions and comparing them by means of modeling tasks. The resulting concept is applied to scan data of a building area of the TU Darmstadt. This shows the possibilities and still existing weaknesses of the automatic modeling. Current systems are unable to automatically create BIM models, but speed up and improve the work significantly. It is assumed that in the future, complicated components will be modeled by software through the continuous improvement of the measuring systems and the algorithms for component recognition.
