Comparison of interaction possibilities in VR/AR environments

There are various ways in which a user can interact in a virtual reality (VR) or augmented reality (AR) environment. Typically, haptic controllers are used, but are other options such as voice control and gesture recognition also suitable for VR and AR applications in the construction and environmental sector?

There are several interaction mechanics available for interacting with objects in an immersive VR/AR environment. These include haptic operation (controller, touch), voice input, eye tracking and gesture recognition. In a position paper (German) (opens in new tab), the Virtual Dimension Center (VDC) Fellbach states that the individual interaction mechanisms are well researched in themselves, but that they have favoured the development of isolated solutions. It demands a scientific evaluation of VR and AR interfaces, especially in comparison to each other.

Within the framework of the thesis, an immersive test environment should be created with the help of the game engine Unity to compare the aforementioned interaction mechanics. Subsequently, user studies should be carried out to allow an evaluation of the interaction mechanics with regard to efficiency, effectiveness and intuitiveness. Finally, guidelines for the development of new VR/AR applications in the building and environmental sector should be established.
