Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a common digital modelling technique in civil and environmental engineering. BIM models can be imported into game engines such as Unity for visual processing and further use. One advantage of this approach is that an executable Unity project can offer more possibilities for visualisation and interaction in contrast to a BIM model.
Within a Unity application, the manipulation of an imported BIM model is more intuitive and faster than in the original BIM software. However, Unity does not provide the possibility to export a modified imported BIM model back into a BIM software. Therefore, approaches for a so-called bidirectional real-time link are currently being discussed, in which changes within a Unity application are transferred live to the BIM model that is open in parallel.
In the context of the thesis, previous approaches to bidirectional real-time linking between the game engine Unity and common BIM software such as Autodesk Revit should be compared. Finally, the most promising approach is to be implemented as a Unity application based on virtual/augmented reality.
