Interoperable Smarthome-Systems and BIM: Preparation, Connection and Visualization

Implementing new technologies and materials in structural modeling, can significantly affect planning reliability, productivity and sustainability. There is no doubt that BIM have passed the theoretical stage and it will be put into practice in construction industry soon. BIM also can be developed to “connected BIM” by utilizing iot. Sensors that are already available in the market, potentially can enhance construction industry and facilities to a higher level. Utilizing sensors and IoT technology combined with BIM technology and 3D Modeling can provide a wide range of valuable information. For instance, this system which is consist of people, infrastructures and materials, can potentially diagnose the problem before happening. Furthermore, structure or house can be fast and easy remotely controlled and customized using computers, cellphones, tablets or voice assistant system by Home-Automation. In this thesis, a concept for a web-based application is designed that integrate BIM model and smart home data and represent the results and the BIM model. In this regard, open-source smart home systems such as “Home Assistant” have been used for data gathering purpose from sensors and “xbim” library (which is available for free) have been utilized in order to analysis BIM data and all the relevant data have been extracted and restored on a database. Then, by linking the sensor data to the BIM model, it is possible to analyze and evaluate them in detail. At the end of this work there will be a demonstrative implementation with conclusion and prospective. The concept presented in this work and the initial implementation, gives a perspective on the web- based visualization of BIM models and further use of the smart home data in relation to BIM is become possible. As an instance, the building model and the smart home system and scientific calculations such as U-value calculation have been linked.
